IPL – Onychomycosis

Fungal Nail Infection Treatment

We use the Nordlys IPL system by Candela to safely and effectively deliver treatment for Onychomycosis or fungal nail infections.

The intense pulsed light (ipl) targets the fungal cells with infrared light causing them to over heat eventually destroying the cells, this is without damaging the healthy skin around it.  As the fungus can spread to other nails, all nails in the fingers or toes depending on the area where the fungus is present, are treated.

Onychomycosis/Fungal Nail Treatment at Urban Sanctuary

A patch test and consultation is required for this treatment.  This takes 20 minutes where a quick medical questionnaire is filled in, a patch test of a small area of the nail is then performed.    Once there are no reactions to the patch test and no contraindications it is possible to go ahead with treatments after 48 hours.

The nail is cleansed and a cooling gel applied to the area, goggles are worn to protect the eyes.   The handpiece from the Nordlys system is applied to the area and pulses of light are transmitted to the area.  Clients will experience a bit of discomfort or stinging sensation but this only lasts for a few seconds.

The treatment takes 20 minutes and there is no downtime required.

For optimum results clients need one session per week for the first 4 to 6 weeks depending on the severity of the case.  The fungus will eventually die away and the new nail growth will be without fungal infection.  It can take up to 9 months for fungal nail to grow out.
