Thread veins or telangiectasia are small broken or enlarged blood vessels that can be found in the dermis layer of the skin, can occur in any area of the body but most commonly in the legs and face. Red, blue or purple in colour they are often referred to as spider veins with a pattern that can be in the form of thin lines, webs or branches.
Thread veins occur due to damage or widening of blood vessels that sit near the top of the skin. They can occur at any time during one’s life but are most common in mature skin. Like most other skin conditions there are many contributing factors that cause thread veins such as genetics, sun exposure, pregnancy, excessive alcohol consumption, acne, rosacea and trauma to the skin. They are not of medical concern but many people choose to treat them for cosmetic purposes.
